The children who took part live across a number of estates that are managed by an award-winning housing association, with whom Save the Children partner. The two-day workshop was an opportunity for the children to learn about photography, and how to express themselves through an image. Using their portrait images taken by Henry J Kamara, the children then created individual collages around them - to represent themselves, their lives and their dreams. The workshop was also a route into a discussion around identity, heritage, representation, family, and poverty. We wanted to hear from children about living in the most deprived area of London, to understand their experiences of growing up in 'poverty' and how the cost-of-living crisis directly impacts them, their daily lives and their futures. TOWER HAMLETS Tower Hamlets is an inner London borough located in the east of London that struggles with poverty and inequality issues. The child poverty rate is the highest of all the London boroughs, with 56% of children judged to be living in households in poverty, compared to 37% in the typical London borough. Likewise, the overall poverty rate, at 39%, is the highest of any London borough. SAVE THE CHILDREN & TOWER HAMLETS Save the Children’s Parent Power project aims to improve learning outcomes for young children living in poverty in Tower Hamlets by empowering parents to support their children’s early learning and development.   We know that the best way to support children and their families in Tower Hamlets is to work alongside others.
